What is Catch-Weight You Ask?catchweight-turkeys

Catch Weight is a food industry term that means “approximate weight”. Because unprocessed food products (particularly meats) naturally vary in size, most food sold by the case is sold by catch weight. The actual weight may be slightly more or less than what is displayed on the Findlay Foods On-Line Shopping Cart.

Catch weight products use two units of measure – an inventory unit and a catch weight unit. The inventory unit is the unit of measure in which the product is weighed and invoiced. The catch weight unit is the unit in which the inventory is sold and shipped.

Let's take a real world example here at Findlay Foods. We have an very popular item, 59260 - TOP SIRLOIN C/C 6oz Thick (28). This Case of Steaks contains 28 steaks , each steak weighting approx 6oz with an average weight for the entire box of 4.54 kg. It is sold priced by the kilogram.

The box will always contain 28 steaks, but the natural variation in the steaks themselves will often make the combined weight of the 28 steaks slightly more or slightly less than the average weight of 4.54 kg.

When the box of 28 steaks is sold by Findlay's, it's weight may be a couple of ounces more or a couple of ounces less that ideal average of 4.54 kilograms. When this item is sold, a particular box is picked and weighted. The exact weight of the box is entered and the price is re-calculated to reflect the exact weight sold at the price per kilogram for that product.
